Mikey Nunziatta felt like he was sinking into a spinning dark void. He couldn’t tell which way was up, which way was down, or whether he was even still alive. As he tried to move, sharp pains radiated from his right shoulder and knee, accompanied by a thudding, pulsating pounding in his head. Amidst his disorientation, he thought he heard someone cry out, almost in excitement, but he couldn’t be sure. The sounds around him were muffled and fuzzy, as if he were hearing underwater.

He struggled to remember where he was. The surroundings certainly didn’t smell like the farm. Instead, he could vaguely smell something burning, different from the scent of his father burning trash in a barrel outside the farmhouse. It was a colder, harsher smell.

Additionally, it was incredibly cold, unlike anything he was used to. He started to shiver, feeling the chill seep into his bones. Then, a female voice called out for more blankets. This time, the voice was clearer, cutting through the fog in his mind like he had just broken the surface of murky water. It definitely wasn’t his mother’s voice, though.

Mikey tried to piece together his last clear memories, but everything seemed jumbled and distant. He vaguely recalled being with his mother, but every attempt to grasp a solid memory slipped away. This only added to his frustration and confusion.

He realized he must be somewhere indoors, likely a place of shelter or care, given the voices and sounds of movement around him. Someone nearby was coordinating care, possibly for him and others. This would indicate he wasn’t alone in experiencing distress.

As he lay there, trying to orient himself, Mikey felt an overwhelming sense of vulnerability. The unfamiliar environment, combined with his inability to move freely or understand his situation, left him feeling exposed and anxious. He wanted to ask for help, to call out to anyone who could hear him. But his voice was weak, with barely a whisper escaping his lips.

Slowly, the reality of his situation began to sink in. He was injured, disoriented, and in an unknown place. He was also clearly far from the safety and familiarity of his home. Despite the confusion and pain, Mikey knew he needed to find out more to understand what had happened to him and how he could get back to his family.

Determined to gather his strength and seek answers, Mikey focused on stabilizing his breathing and calming his racing mind. As he did so, snippets of conversation from those nearby began to form a clearer picture of the chaos outside. Whatever had transpired, it was significant.

As the fragments of his memories pieced together, Mikey’s realization of his whereabouts brought a fleeting sense of relief that quickly dissolved into horror as the memories continued to unfold. He remembered being in New York City standing with his mother outside a police station moments after dealing with a contentious requisitions officer who had tried to undercut their price on the horses.
